Carpeting 2019

Carpeting is a public art painting installed at Joyce Collingwood SkyTrain Station in Vancouver, Canada.

Carpeting employs a simple rectilinear geometric pattern of colour based on the design of a traditional carpet that we associate with the home. By bringing this element of home to the station we literally warm it up and make it a more inviting place to pass through or wait for a bus. While not recognizable, the carpet design has been modernized through random repetition, and manipulation on the computer. I used a limited palette of nine colours, both analogous and contrasting in a range of temperatures and tones. These have been painted on the existing grid of the plaza pavers and on many of the surfaces of the station structures.

The electrical box is covered with a vinyl wrap and is based on familiar concrete ‘breeze’ block patterns found in neighbourhood fencing. The elements are reduced in size and colour and suggest a lantern.
