Screens, synonymous with many forms of communication media – televisions, movies, computers and phones – at one time only fulfilled the desire for privacy and were found in both exterior and interior architecture. Screens defined boundaries through decorative interventions – the concrete block fence, the Venetian blind, the room divider, the dressing screen and curtains to name but a few. While implying transparency conscious layering and the breakup of planes resulted in disturbing overlays and spatial incongruencies.
The compositions of these paintings, elaborate photo collages, combine screen shots of TV shows, primarily
Mad Men, with architectural screens either juxtaposed or placed over dramatic exterior or interior settings. The resultant paintings speak to ubiquitous urbanity – it could be anywhere – and the metaphors embodied in our constructed environments.
